Our History

In 2000, DeLois Sparks, the founder of Dee’s Place was employed at HEBCAC as a family service worker. Her vision of a 24-hour recovery support center became the lasting legacy of a planning and organizing effort supported by HEBCAC, which convened community members to conduct an assessment of needs related to addiction.

Through personal drive and conviction, Dee’s Place attracted a group of dedicated volunteers to help keep the doors open all night, every night of the year, on a shoe string budget. Many did not think it could be done, but Ms. Dee’s vision, and the community that rallied to her vision, proved that it could!

In 2004, Dee’s Place along with 2 other community-based recovery support centers (Penn North and Recovery in the Community) joined to create a network named Threshold to Recovery, which was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems, and several private Baltimore foundations. Many valuable lessons were learned through this collaboration and it helped to influence and guide many of the current peer recovery support practices existing in the State of Maryland today.

The early supporters of Dee’s Place were local Baltimore City private foundations and later Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems (now Behavioral Health Systems Baltimore). We are grateful to continue our partnership with local foundations, human service providers, and donors to allow us to offer essential services at no cost to the Baltimore community.
