Our Projects

901 N. Milton Ave.

The Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Community Center Project located at 901 N Milton Ave. was completed in 2008.  This $10 million project renovated the 55,000 sq. ft former Grief Bros apparel plant and required creative financing utilizing New Market, federal, and state historic tax credits.  This building houses non-profit organizations and employers who provide services and jobs for area residents.

City Seeds

In partnership with Humanim,  City Seeds is a social enterprise which offers workforce and entrepreneurial opportunities for those interested in the food service industry. HEBCAC helped to develop the building which now houses a multitude of cooking appliances used for education and food production. The facility is a $4.3M economic development project constructed by HEBCAC. Completed in the late fall of 2017, it is a fully licensed commercial kitchen owned by HEBCAC and operated by Humanim’s City Seeds staff.

Northeast Market

In partnership with the Baltimore Public Markets Corporation (BPMC), Johns Hopkins University, and Baltimore City, HEBCAC led the $2.3M renovation of the Northeast Market at 2101 E. Monument Street.  The project was completed in phases between 2013 and 2017 and brought together many economic and community development objectives: strengthening the Monument Street retail corridor, improving access to healthy foods, incorporating  public art, reducing energy usage and creating jobs.

Station East

Formerly known as “Little Bohemia,” this neighborhood was built in the early 20th Century for newly arrived Bohemian immigrants. Unfortunately, between 1990-2010 the neighborhood experienced disinvestment, and vacant rowhouses in the community grew rapidly. The Station East Project has significantly strengthened a key section of East Baltimore by eliminating over 60 units of blighted vacant row housing, creating green space including 3 new community parks, rehabbing over 30 units of formerly vacant row homes, and working with existing home owners and landlords to improve over 30 properties to date. Just across the street from the new $50M Hopkins Henderson Partnership School, Station East leverages the impact of the massive public-private investment of East Baltimore Development Inc.(EBDI) and extends the redevelopment to encompass an entire adjacent neighborhood.

The Sage Center

Completed in 2016 in partnership with Episcopal Housing Corp, this $5M project converted the former St. Katherine’s school located at 1209 N Rose St into a supportive housing complex for the Family Recovery Program. The adaptive re-use of this 28,000 sq. ft. classroom building now provides comprehensive living and program space for 22 client families. Family Recovery Program staff are on-site 24-hour security and intensive case management to ensure the success of client families including referrals to healthcare, transportation, and job placement.
